Elizabeth Zunon discovers something new every time she picks up the paint brush. She is a book illustrator and author specializing in African and African-American subject matter, and combines collage with painting. After creating a book on Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden, his style has had a deep influence on Zunon's approach. One of her books tells of women in Africa coming up with a creative solution for the discarded plastic bags in the streets and rivers which were harming children and animals by collecting and cleaning them before cutting them into strips which are crocheted into purses which are then sold. It a story not only about the environment but about women's empowerment. She also wrote and illustrated a book about how her grandfather cultivated cocoa beans in the Ivory Coast, as tory her father recounts while making chocolate cake with his daughter.
